Peavine Pete Habitat Conservation Ambassador Hello! My name is Peavine Pete and I’m the newest addition to Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation! I am a Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) and usually live in the deserts of Southern Nevada, but TMPF adopted me from the Northern Nevada Tortoise Group. Now I get to live in Northern Nevada! I’m between 10 and 15 years old, I can’t exactly remember, but I live to be about 80 in captivity, so 5 years doesn’t seem like much to forget. Sadly, my species is listed as THREATENED under the Endangered Species Act. Much of our tortoise habitat in the desert is being lost due to development, degraded from invasive species, or fragmented by roads or other impassable barriers. I enjoy long walks outside, cozy burrows and marigolds! I am passionate about the preservation of our beautiful local, desert outdoors spaces. I’m very excited to join the TMPF Team and to become an ambassador to the community for habitat conservation. Stop by Rosewood Nature Study Area and say hello! With community input, the City of Reno and the Somersett Owners Association have partnered to design and build a new park in West Somersett. Rosewood Bridge Repair Project Goal : To repair the emergency acc ess bridge at Rosewood Nature Study Area Project Description: Lauren Jilot’s Eagle Project focuses on restoring a bridge at the Rosewood Nature Study Area. The bridge was built originally in 1990 and is 10 feet wide by 99 feet long. It’s the only way a full size vehicle, including an emergency vehicle, could access the Nature Study’s trails. The bridge cannot withstand the weight of a vehicle in its current state and is blocked off. If there were to be a medical emergency on the property, first responders wouldn’t be able to bring vehicles onto the property. The bridge also allows space for overflow parking and extra storage. To restore the bridge, she must purchase and install new decking, metal strap ties, bolts, and screws. She must hire a construction company to re-deck the bridge so that it's done correctly and professionally to ensure long term safety and stability. This project was completed October 2023 but your support helps maintain the bridge and support Lauren's work! Donate 1/6 Thank you to all the community members supporting this project. With community input, the City of Reno and the Somersett Owners Association have partnered to design and build a new park in West Somersett. Galena Athletics Fitness and Conditioning Trail Project Goal : Galena Athletics is working with a professional trail builder to construct a natural surface trail on Washoe County Parks land adjacent to the school. Why use hills for training?: Hill training is good for all sports. It is the perfect combination of strength and speed training, which will benefit not only runners, but football, basketball, soccer and baseball/softball players. They can also help prevent injuries by increasing ankle strength and flexibility and in helping to prevent shin splints. Ankle strength improves an athlete’s ability to push off harder and increase explosiveness. Uphill running also decreases impact forces on the athlete’s legs and lower joints. Project Description: We intend to use a professional trail builder to lay out the course and to do the major grading. The trail will be comprised of three segments totaling about ½ mile, each offering a different training opportunities. The 300 meter base trail (black line) will be 8’ wide and about 5% grade, allowing athletes to work on speed and endurance training. The 200 meter green line will be steeper (about 7%), enabling athletes to build power on the steeper grade. The 300 meter red line completes the loop, allowing for distance runners (or walkers) to perform multiple loops for endurance training. These two trail segments will be about 4’ wide. The trail will be designed to ensure runoff doesn’t create erosion issues, and to assist with drying after rain events. Cost: The expected construction cost is about $6,000 for the major grading. Volunteers (our athletes) will help with hand work to help keep costs down and to build a sense of ownership by our athletes. We are soliciting donations and are working through the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (a 501c(3) nonprofit) on fundraising so that your donations will be tax deductable. You may donate through this link (or QR code). All funds raised in excess of the construction cost will be used to create a donor plaque on site, and for future maintenance and possible expansion (such as a new trail to the “G” from the school. With community input, the City of Reno and the Somersett Owners Association have partnered to design and build a new park in West Somersett. Confluence Art Project Confluence: Stream Science, Handwriting and Urban Curbs, is a temporary public artwork, a mile-long, six-thousand-word poem about water and land. It’s meant to be read in pieces as you follow the flow of water through Reno. Our Vision: Water flows from mountain peaks to oceans and lakes, moving through forests and cities, bodies and pipes. While scientists study ‘wild’ water in mountain streams, that same water flows through urban landscapes and waterways. Confluence playfully brings these connections to our attention through poetry, running along the Truckee River through Reno’s parks and neighborhoods. Using bright yellow, adhesive-backed sheets and a digital cutting process, the lettering is done in a font made especially for this project from the handwriting of Claude Dukes, Federal Water Master in the Reno area from 1958 until his death in 1984. The text is written by Todd Gilens, based on four years assisting ecologists in the Sierra Nevada, as well as research on ancient water systems, and field work with urban structures and buried streams. Water ties everything together, shaping the world while changing from one form to another. Attention to the role of water affirms our interdependence with the land. With contributions from individuals, businesses, civic and governmental agencies, Confluence has become a lively and personal public artwork. Funding Needs: We are now seeking funding to preserve and distribute the poem in book form. Photographs of the installation, and essays by William L. Fox and Elizabeth Koebele, scholars in environmental art and water policy, will add dimension to the meaning of the work. We hope to issue the book sometime in 2024.
