As park pals and natural scientists, we want to reassure you that we are passionate about keeping the Junior Naturalist Program accessible to you and your family while still following health guidelines and keeping our community safe. While most of our 2020 Junior Naturalist programs were canceled, we promise to pack our revamped 2021 programs with double the fun! If you miss a month's program, scroll down to our Virtual Program Archive to experience our past Naturalist adventures. Check out our program details below and please email us if you have any questions. Program details What is the Junior Naturalist Program? The Junior Naturalist Program is a free, temporarily virtual program for children of all ages that brings new outdoor adventures directly to your living room. Join our Naturalist Educators virtually on the third Saturday of every month as they explore plants, animals, and the environment from featured local parks. Each program starts on YouTube with a half-hour of educational exploration; our Naturalist Educators will go over an exciting topic and lead a hands-on activity for you to follow along with at home. We will conclude by asking you to email us your Naturalist questions and observations and giving you a scavenger hunt clue to encourage you to explore the month's featured park for yourself! What is a Naturalist? A naturalist is someone who studies plants, animals, and natural history. Natural history is the study of natural objects using your awesome observation and analysis skills! Any child who has an interest in the natural world around them can become a Junior Naturalist! We recommend that younger children have someone with them who can help gather supplies and navigate the computer. As a Junior Naturalist, your child will be encouraged to explore the aspects of nature that interest them through hikes, games, and educational activities. Remember - nature starts at your own front door, so you can be a Junior Naturalist no matter where you are! What supplies will I need? On a monthly basis, our program's activities will alternate between using common household supplies (paper, pen, pinecones, etc.) and using special materials that we provide. We will specify on each program registration form which kind of activity to expect! For programs using household supplies: About a week before the month's program, we will email you with a list of supplies you will need. If you can't find some of these materials in your household, let us know and we will set some aside for you. For programs using provided supplies: After you register, we will add you to a contact list and email you with a schedule of available pickup times. To ensure everyone's safety, all materials will be sanitized, bagged, and available for drive-thru pickup from our Idlewild Park Office. How do I get my Junior Naturalist Passport? Our passports have been delayed in the mail - we will let you know when they are ready for you! Our Passport holds information about each park that we will be featuring and exclusive activities to do in each park. When you attend each monthly program, you will also receive a special stamp to put in your Passport and qualify for end-of-year prizes! Until we are able to see you in person again, we will be emailing you your stamps. To confirm attendance, we will be hiding a "password" in our live-stream videos. To earn your virtual stamp and qualify for prizes, you will need to return to this webpage and submit the Naturalist Attendance Form with the password. Virtual program archive Missed a program? - Doggie Ambassador Project | tmparksfoundation
Volunteer with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation and help us keep dog waste out of our parks and river. This project is made possible with the help of dedicated volunteers and community partners. Help us stock dog waste bag dispensers in the Truckee Meadows as a Doggie Ambassador! Through your service, community members will now have access to free dog waste bags at Truckee Meadows’ parks. As dg waste bags are distributed, we will work to reduce the amount of dog waste in our parks, open spaces, and the Truckee River watershed. User If you already volunteer with TMPF, log in become a Doggie Ambassador. Edit New to us? Sign up to start volunteering! Donation Looking to support in other ways? Your donation will help keep dog waste bags available in our parks! Every time it rains or snow melts, dog waste is washed into drains and storm sewers. The waste, full of unhealthy bacteria, flows with the stormwater directly into ponds, lakes, and rivers. In high enough quantities, the bacteria and parasites found in dog waste cause bodies of water to become unsafe for recreation activities like swimming and fishing. 1/4 Help us map dog waste in the Truckee Meadows as a Poop Plotter Community Scientist! Your poop plots will help define the scope of the dog waste problem in our parks and open spaces - spreading awareness, targeting resources, and keeping our public spaces safe and clean. User If you already volunteer with TMPF, log in to your account to start plotting poop. Edit If you would like to officially join our volunteer community, sign-up to help track turds. Star No ready to fully commit? Continue as a guest to help mark manure. What's Your Style? Protect the Truckee River Watershed by Picking up Dog Waste We all have our own style of doing things and this includes how we pick up after our dogs Whether you have the perfect jump shot every time you go for the trash can, pick it up with world record speed, or know the ultimate one handed life hack, when you pick up after your dog you're helping protect the Truckee River Community Partners Thank you, Healthy Tails, for your donation of 1,000 Dog Bag Leash Dispensers! Thank you, Natural Paws of Galena and the Storm Water Permit Coordinating Committee for your help with repeated donations of dog waste bags for the Doggie Ambassador Project!

Volunteer with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation and help us keep dog waste out of our parks and river. This project is made possible with the help of dedicated volunteers and community partners. Only You Can Toss Your Dog's Poo! Protecting the Truckee River Watershed In addition to the unpleasant experience it creates for park-goers, dog waste poses a significant risk to environmental and human health! Why should we clean up dog waste? Every time it rains or snow melts, dog waste is washed into drains and storm sewers. The waste, full of unhealthy bacteria, flows with the stormwater directly into ponds, lakes, and rivers. In high enough quantities, the bacteria and parasites found in dog waste cause bodies of water to become unsafe for recreation activities like swimming and fishing. 1/4 How Can You Help? Get More Stations Near You! In 2023, the Doggie Ambassador Project distributed 491,800 dog waste bags. This n umber increased from 447,000 waste bags in 2022. Each of these bags distributed represents dog waste that was picked up and prevented from entering the Truckee River watershed! A gift of $500 will install a new dog waste station, and supply it with 2 years worth of bags! Any amount helps this ongoing project, so please give what you can. The pups thank you in advance! Donate Now Become A Doggie Ambassador! The Doggie Ambassador Project comprises 90 waste stations across 54 parks, trails, and open spaces in Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County. - Protege sus Parques | tmparksfoundation
During this global pandemic, help us help our parks, and people, continue to grow with a donation today!
